How UK VAT works
Most goods and services in the UK carry the standard VAT rate of 20%. Some, such as home energy, are charged at the reduced rate of 5%, and others, such as most food and children's clothes, are zero-rated.
To add 20% VAT, multiply the net price by 1.2. To take VAT out of a VAT-inclusive price, divide by 1.2: the difference is the VAT. At the 5% rate, use 1.05 instead.
Example
A net price of £1,000 plus 20% VAT is £200 of VAT and £1,200 in total. If £1,200 already includes VAT, the net amount is £1,000.
You must register for VAT when your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period. Check the current rules on GOV.UK before you rely on any figure.
FAQ
Questions, answered
What is the VAT rate in the UK?
The standard rate is 20%. There is also a reduced rate of 5% and a zero rate of 0% for some goods and services.
How do I remove 20% VAT from a price?
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.2 to get the net amount. Subtract that from the original price to get the VAT. Do not just take 20% off the total, as that gives the wrong answer.
When do I have to register for VAT?
When your VAT-taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or you expect it to in the next 30 days.
